道 – Art
Three major arts in Japan include 茶道 (sado= art of tea ceremony), 華道 (kado=art of flower arrangement) and香道 (kodo=art of incense) while 書道 (shodo=art of penmanship) often replaces one of them.
歌道 (kado=art of waka/tanka) is derived from Heian period. 和歌 (waka) or 短歌 (tanka) is our traditional poem, consists of 5, 7, 5, 7, 7=31 syllables. Love letters exchanged between noble couples in ancient times had such form, lead to a study to express one’s emotion, beautiful sights and even the spirit of religions.
柔道(judo), 相撲(sumo wrestling), 空手道(karate), 合気道(aikido), 少林寺拳法(shorinji boxing), 剣道(kendo), 薙刀(naginata kendo), 銃剣道(bayonet spearmanship) and 弓道(kyudo=Japanese archery) represent 武道 (budo=martial art).
